Im Internet wird seit einiger Zeit berichtet, dass mysteriöse Funksignale vom Sternensystem Proxima Centauri, „Entfernung circa 4,2 Lichtjahre“ auf einer Frequenz abgefangen wurde, die nur von einem intelligenten Leben erzeugt werden kann. Vor etwa 126 Jahren, im Jahr 1895, gelang es Guglielmo Marconi und Alexander Stepanowitsch, in etwa von 5 km Entfernung ein Funksignal auszusenden. 
Seitdem senden Menschen Funksignale, die sich mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit in alle Richtungen ausbreiten. Wir können also davon ausgehen, dass sich unser Aktionsradius um 100 Lichtjahre dreht, reduziert auf 50, wenn wir eine Antwort in Form einer elektromagnetischen Frequenz abwarten, ist es genau in dieser Entfernung wo wir das finden können, immer nur dann, wenn auf der anderen Seite eine ähnliche Technologie vorhanden ist. Seit 1960 suchen Radioteleskope nach diesem Signal, die bekannteste Organisation ist SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). Wissenschaftler glauben, dass außerirdisches Leben existiert und dass sie auf ihrem Planeten ungefähr leben wie wir auf unserem und das, ihre Zivilisationen die gleichen Kommunikationstechniken haben. Es würde also ausreichen, eine Frequenz zu erfassen, um zu antworten. So warten wir auf unbekannte Funksignale aus dem Weltall und durchsuchen die verschiedenen Wellenlängen des Spektrums.
